A Lot to Ride Home About

Summertime means motorcycle meets and rallies, and one of the northeast’s largest meets moves to Litchfield County this year. After spending 23 years on the other side of the state in Hebron, the Yankee Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America’s annual National Meet moves to Terryville. It will be staged Aug. 3-4 at the Terryville Fairgrounds. The event features some magnificent antique motorcycles and usually attracts about 1,000 riders and dozens of vendors.

There are dozens of other events from which to choose, and that doesn’t include charity rides for good causes, so here’s a compact list of what promises to be the highlights of this season:

20 – Blessing of the Motorcycles at 1:30 p.m. at Lourdes Shrine in Litchfield. Website:
27 – British Motorcycle Show and Swap Meet presented by British Iron Association of Massachusetts at Singletary Rod & Gun Cub in Oxford, Mass. Gates open at 10 a.m. Admission is $10. Website:

4-9 – Americade is a week-long rally in Lake George, N.Y. that features guided rides, motorcycle demos, vendor expo and block party/concert. Website:
9-17 – Laconia Motorcycle Week is a week-long rally in Laconia, N.H. Website:
10 – British Motorcycle Meet staged by BSA Owners Club of New England. It runs from 9 3 p.m. at Bolton Fair fairgrounds in Lancaster, Mass. Admission is $10. Website:
15-16 – Rhinebeck Meet from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Duchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck, N.Y. Website:
24 – The 3rd annual Thompson Vintage Motorcycle Classic at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park in Thompson. Admission is $10. Website:

8 – Falls Village Car & Motorcycle Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Falls Village. Free for spectators.
21 – Hendee Day & Vintage Motorcycle Rally at Hilltop Farm in Suffield. Hours are from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the former farm of original Indian Motocycle co-founder George Hendee. A donation of $10 per bike or car is suggested. Website:
22 – Indian Motorcycle Day at the Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History in Springfield, Mass., which is not far from the site where the original Indians were built. It’s a great two-fer event – a show outside and the museum display that traces Indian’s history inside. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $10 adults and $5 for children. Website:
22 – Doc’s 5th Annual Vintage & Classic Bike Show at Doc’s Motorcycle Parts, 1625 Thomaston Ave. in Waterbury. Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Website:

3-4 – Yankee Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America National Meet at the Terryville Fairgrounds in Terryville. Entry fee is $5. Admission is free for riders of 35-year-old or older motorcycles. A good opportunity to see some rare machines. Website:
15 – The 13th annual Middletown Motorcycle Mania in downtown Middletown from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. It’s a glorious madhouse with thousands of bikes and riders, vendors, food stands and music. There’s a $10 entry donation and $15 entry donation for show bikes. Website:
19 – Brit Jam hosted by the British Iron Association of Connecticut. The 33rd annual Brit Jam meet will be held at the Haddam Neck Fairgrounds in East Haddam from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $10. Website:

9 – Rice-O-Rama, the all-Japanese meet from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Spencer Fairgrounds in Spencer, Mass. Admission is $10. Website:
9 – The annual classic European Motorcycle Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA. Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for military, seniors, students and children. Museum open for viewing until 4 p.m.
16 – The 35th annual IMOC Rally hosted by the Italian Motorcycle Owners Club at the Hamilton Rod & Gun Club in Sturbridge, Mass. Laverda is the featured marque. It runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $10 and $15 for rider and passenger. Website:
